I opened the bedroom window for air and reached up to adjust the screen.
The whole screen shifted forward into my hands.
For one second I froze, holding it halfway out of the frame like I had just stolen part of the apartment.
The bottom corner had popped loose, and the little metal tabs were bent flat.
I tried lining it back up, but the screen kept tilting inward every time I let go.
Outside, bugs were already circling the porch light.
So I had to close the window again, even though the room was warm and stuffy.
I sent maintenance a picture of the screen leaning against the wall.
They replied that window parts had to be ordered.
That night, the only thing getting fresh air was the broken screen.
