The apartment felt heavy and hot by dinner, so I went to turn the thermostat down.
That was when I remembered the clear plastic cover.
Locked.
The little screen inside said 79 degrees, just sitting there like it was proud of itself.
I called the office and asked if someone could adjust it.
They said the building system was set for the season and told me to keep the blinds closed.
I was already standing there with the blinds closed.
I tried pressing the buttons through the plastic anyway, which did absolutely nothing except make me feel ridiculous.
By bedtime, I had a fan on a chair and a damp towel on the back of my neck.
The thermostat stayed locked, glowing calmly in its tiny plastic jail.
