The crash woke me up so fast I sat straight up in bed.
For a second, I thought someone had broken in.
Then I heard hangers sliding and boxes hitting the floor inside the closet.
The top shelf had pulled right out of the wall.
Clothes, shoes, winter blankets, and a storage bin were all piled in one sad mountain by the closet door.
The brackets were still attached to the shelf, but the wall anchors had come loose like they were barely holding on.
I took pictures and sent a maintenance request before trying to sleep again.
Every few minutes, another hanger slipped down from the pile.
The closet kept finishing the collapse without me.
