I loaded the washer, poured in detergent, and scanned the machine code with the laundry app.
The payment went through.
The washer did not start.
I tried pressing the button again, but the screen only blinked and went back to the same message.
So I scanned it one more time, thinking maybe the first payment did not connect.
The app charged me again.
The washer still stayed locked and silent.
I stood there in the laundry room with detergent already on my clothes, two charges on my phone, and a machine that had done absolutely nothing.
The office told me to contact the laundry company.
